Got to Control Panel and select the Java Plugin (must be version 1.4.0 or higher). The following dialog will be displayed:

 

Click on the "Advanced," tab. The Java Plug-in has a 96 MB dynamic maximum heap size. Overlowing this is a cause of OutOfMemeory errors. Most computers have more than 96MB that can be allocated to the dynamic maximum heap of the Java Plug-in. This is done by putting in a new value in under the "Java Runtime Parameters," as shown below. In this case, we have upped the Java Plug-in dynamic maxiumum heap size to 256 MB. Note the format is -Xmx?m where "?" is the amount, in MB to allot.
